i mean it's nice that nami can navigate and robin can read shit, but that is hardly a focal and consistent element of one piece, in contrast to, you know. and it is a shame really, since oda has shown that he can write female characters with intresting backstories, narrative arcs, goals, etcetra, and still they are lacking in presence, impact and importance for the overall plot.Įven big mom is arguably the least important and maybe least powerful of the yonko, while most of the notable female cast is relegated for being eye candy at best most of the time, and an incompetent hindrance at worst. Personally i just hate how, not unlike other shows of the genre, and despite the show's supernatural battle systems, women still play second fiddle in regards to being powerful and influential figures in one piece's world. ![]() While oda's designs for female characters can be quite one note at times, imo it is hardly the worst problem concerning women in the series. I've never looked into OP and it's doubtful I ever will. But that's all just conjecture off of screencaps and limited knowledge.Ĭan't say anything about how they are from a writing/characterization standpoint because I have no knowledge on that front. *They're* supposed to find them attractive, not the reader/viewer. In a weird way, it might be like fanservice for the male characters in the show itself rather than anything for the audience. OP's art style has a more cartoon-y vibe to it and that leads to more pronounced emphasis like we can see with some of the characters above. My *best* guess, with my limited knowledge of the series and going off of the designs I've seen, would be that he tries making them look attractive from an in-universe artstyle perspective rather than trying to make them look attractive to the audience. I honestly can't even tell if he's trying to make them look attractive because of how the designs look, so I'll just guess that he is in some way, shape or form because of the areas he tends to really make look like.something are usually pretty prominent ero-zones. But it'd still be workable if their bodies weren't just straight up fucking weird so often. ![]() Of course, it doesn't help that Oda's art is far from sexy, so even if their bodies weren't kind of carnival freak show-ish, things like their faces just aren't very conducive to sex appeal and it'd be a harder sell than normal on that front because of that barrier. I can't tell whether or not the guy is trying to make them look attractive because my experience is limited to what I've seen just by wandering around the fandom for a good while, but the designs themselves look so alien and off-putting with the hyperemphasized curves and breasts that I'm at a loss on what to make of it.
